Chasing the Thing: the River Fugue Series
September 8 – 29, 2018
Opening reception Saturday, September 8, 6 to 9 pm
Nature images can be found in Mattox’s paintings, as can images of furniture, animals, religious symbols, human forms and much more. Some pieces are densely packed with figures and vibrant earthy colors. Others are quieter with white backgrounds and more graphite-drawn items.
Needing a break from sculpture, Mattox took up painting 15 years ago, although he’d never had any formal painting lessons. Now many of his mixed media paintings combine some sort of sculpture, ceramics or found objects — whether it’s branches from the woods or random pieces from salvage yards or friends — with the oil paints and graphite drawings on his hand-built oak panels.
Please join us for the opening reception on September 8. The exhibition will remain on view through September 29.
The public also is invited to join us on Saturday, September 29, 2 to 4 pm for “Q & A with Bernard.”
This exhibition is made possible through the generosity of our 2018 Season of Arts sponsors.
